midnight grumblings

bart's resolution for the day
i knew i'd hook you with this. *snicker, snicker*

--
it's 1:10 am. lately i've been spending 3-4 hour nightly surfings for i don't know what reasons... i believe i spend this time blogging, checking email, downloading music, looking for max foster, searching for actor/actress/singer/band/movie info, posting on message boards, taking tests (occasionally), log to nationstates (where i have my own country, Kroznovia! mwahaha!), and... god knows what. please, my internet life is crappy. suggest a site.

i *hate* friendster blogs. i spend so much time trying to post my entries (essays, actually) there for nothing. the loading is s--l--o--w, and the page f*cks up right in the middle of publishing. is it my dial-up? i believe not. i wonder if i'll continue with the account, or let it rot. maybe i'll open another blogspot. 'coz blogger is still the best. (consumer guaranteed.)

and on another, i forgot to mention that my bloody hell came last tuesday. hallelujah! :-)

of hills and horrors

i always love a feel-good movie, and perhaps one of my all-time favorites would be rodgers and hammerstein's the sound of music... i watched quite a chunk of it yesterday at wowow, and still i consider it a grand movie. imagine, it was done way back in the 60's, and until now it never fails to capture the hearts of just about anyone. (i wonder if somebody hates this movie!) from the songs, to the story, to the characters, oh how i wish i was stuck in this film capsule! the early parts of the film quite reminded me of our class' vividly memorable production (with the line-ups and the whistles and all... pretty hilarious!) .. among the songs, i'd pick "my favorite things" and, ahmm, "the sound of music". (weird fantasy: me, high-pitched, with alps scenery:"the hills are aliiiiive... with the sound of muuu..siiic!!!!) julie andrews was wonderful, and still is (i sneaked to watch the dvd of "the princess diaries 2" a couple of weeks ago). and dear, it's a treat to see christopher plummer when he was still fine-looking (come on, i had a slight crush on captain von trapp when i watched tSoM a few years back, and it's all coming baaack...). man, did he grow old and wrinkled and white-haired when i saw him alongside russell crowe on "the insider"! just goes to show we can't forever hold on to our dazzle... 50 years later, i wonder how i'll look like? ;-)

watching "tSoM" with my dad, he told me about his experience back then in 1963 (i think he was 7 or 8), when the family watched the big-screen version at the local orpheum... he said he couldn't see a thing because it was a standing-room show, and the theater was jam-packed and everyone was on their feet to see the screen! he then related that "the sound of music" was shown for a record six months here! that's so fanatical! nowadays, the usual 'playspan' of a major big-budgeted film is around 10 weeks only, or maybe three months...

all been said, "the sound of music" is pretty much a testament to the term "oldies but goodies"...

-----

i've been perusing self-help/inspirational books from the bookshelf lately, recent of them is francis j. kong's "one day at a time". i like the stories, parables, words of wisdom, and bits & pieces the book has to offer. there's an entry on october 31 that talks about not supporting or watching horror films because it fools the mind into thinking scared and it's a waste of money & time. since anyway, it's got a connection with my blog entry (= movies!), i want to share with you this funny cynical list (excerpt):

"Tips from the Horror Movie Characters' Survival Guide"

1. If you're searching for something that caused a mysterious noise and find out that it's just the cat, leave the room immediately if you value your life.
2. When you have the benefit of numbers, never pair it off or go it alone.
3. Do not search the basement, especially if the electrical power has just gone out.
4. As a general rule, don't solve puzzles that open portals to hell.
5. Never stand in, on, above, below, beside or anywhere near a grave, crypt, tomb, mausoleum or any other house of the dead.
6. If appliances start operating by themselves, move out.
7. Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, Nilbog, the Bermuda Triangle or any small town in Maine.
8. Beware of strangers bearing tools such as chain saws, staple guns, hedge trimmers, electric carving knives, combines, lawn mowers, butane torches, soldering irons or band saws,
9. If your car runs out of gas at night, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help.
10. When you have killed a monster, NEVER check to see if it's really dead.

i never really liked horror movies. though i did watch them voraciously when i was younger, but now i don't because i find them tasteless and boring (scaredy-cat!!!). i'd rather like suspense... and some romance. and i secretly want to watch "madagascar"!

with bated breath (yeah, right)

another week was spent... and i'm finally counting the 2-weeks-or-so till my first day of college begins! i've been itching and groaning to get out of this rut last month like i'm doomed for eternity and now, there's barely a month left! ahhh.... (just so you know, my c-day's on june 15.) some of my dear friends and batchmates have already started theirs, and i'm a little bit envious (at least they've got themselves occupied now!)... how's their fresh-men (and fresh-women) experience? :-)

i, though, haven't prepared much yet for my back-to-school. no books (the profs, and i hope they're tolerable!, will have to list it), no notebooks (where have i placed the unused ones???), no pens (my "invisible" pen will scribble on my "invisible" notebook...), but i do have a bag! i'm thinking of shopping for the goods on sunday.

in different matters, i bet you're not surprised that i have already watched "star wars 3"... we thought we'd scratch the first week out because a lot of people are sure to pack it, but... uh... boredom made me squeal! i liked the movie (again, EVEN if i'm not a fan and i didn't understand much of what the hell were they fighting about) ... at last, the saga is over! i just thought anakin's descent to the Dark Side was splattered on too fast... just a couple of coaxings from 'daddykins' palpatine (i have to admit, he was very 'into' his role) and bam! the Wheezy rises! and i couldn't help but laugh a little when anakin vader said the infamous, "if you're not with me, then you are my enemy." i thought, oh my goulash, Dubya took over! well, all's said and done, and hundreds of millions are pouring in chewbacca's (i mean, georgie's) pocket... i read a comic strip today (pugad baboy), and it joked that soon after, there's gonna be remakes of "the empire strikes back", "the return of the jedi", and "a new hope"! goulash redux!

for keen "SW" people, check out this Star Wars Personality Test! ... my result should, by now, come without question (although i freaked out on this)....

the pink princess phenomenon

i think i'm on a roll these days, talking about movies and hp and stuff like that... i'm not exactly an authority on modern pop culture, but i pride myself on being (at least, maybe) 'on the know' about what's hot... and speaking of "hot", let me give my two centavos on the pink princess phenomenon, Paris Hilton.

i have simmered my thoughts and hate (ok, maybe a little bit of envy too) about this pampered heiress (who took the world by sex video storm) for quite a while now, maybe i should discuss (there's nothing much, i tell you). for one, i absolutely *LOATHE* paris. she's lame, even with all her wealth. she's also a ditz. she should wield her influence to good use, but umm.. she's turned up at the wrong alley. i know i shan't go criticizing others but i really do wish people like her (or maybe she's one of a kind!) to get exterminated! she's got her private moments exposed (and she likes it), got her blackberry address book hacked, stars in her first movie debut as a stripper, and now she's sexing it up for a hamburger? (i decided not to put a picture.)

while walking home, i get to see a guess? billboard, featuring paris and a snake on her top. yeuch. i hate seeing that image. she should be thankful she's good-looking, or else she would've been tabloid sidebar fodder ("fat paris eats the eiffel tower!") rather than a cover girl! actually i don't really find her beautiful, though i *have* to admire her flawless skin. and the eyes... (what if i were a guy? i shudder to think that i *might* even like her!) i got to watch an episode of her hit "the simple life", and i don't know whether the things she and nicole does are even for real (maybe it's not!) but the show's quite ... interesting. (i wonder if i'll ever see it again)

besides the show, she's got "house of wax" out in theaters, "confessions of an heiress" in pink hardcover, (and i hear) an album coming out! that's total exposure that's gonna last for the next 20 years??.... oh-my-goodness!!!!!! noooooo!!!! i'm m-e-l-t-i-n-g!!!!! ****ROFL**** :D

without a period

is it un-bloggable to blog about health and hygiene matters? if it is, just tell me.

i'm having a problem with my hormonal system. truth is, i still don't have my period for the past 2 weeks from the time i think it should be coming... so it's probably 50 days ago since my last "bloody hell" dropped. i don't think i've had a skipped period since i was 14 or something... it's kinda disturbs me! i always hate it when the PMS arrives (like it's a week-long plague), i even don't say the "m" word when i know it's coming, because the PMS hormones in my body might detect it and boom! but now i'm missing it. i feel abnormal! i'm not a woman! then the question...

"could i be pregnant??!?!??" <--- DUH, that's frickin' RIDICULOUS!!!! ;-)

maybe it's the medicine i took (i had a recent cold), the heat, being my lonesome self, being inactive, for whatever reason i don't know how to diagnose. all i can do now is WAIT..........

harry potter and the half-blood prince

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE

(from Mugglenet, with some side comments):

These are facts straight from the mouth of J.K. Rowling, and were gathered from numerous online chats and her personal website. Everything here is confirmed.

Release Date: July 16th, 2005

RANDOM FACTS ABOUT THE BOOK

  • We will learn a lot more about Voldemort in this book.
  • HBP will be an intense book, but with light-hearted moments.
  • Harry will leave Privet Drive early again, for a "much pleasanter" reason than in book 5.
  • The opening chapter of book 6 was originally planned for the early parts of book 1, perhaps we get a more in-depth story of what happened the night Harry's parents died.
  • Neither Harry or Voldemort (including Tom Riddle) are the Half-Blood Prince (so who could it be?!)
  • Arthur Weasley will not be the new Minister of Magic
  • By the ends of books 6 and 7 "you'll have all the back story you'll need", says JK Rowling, and a prequel will not be necessary (unlike "star wars", bleeeh)
  • There will be a new Minister of Magic, no more Mr. Fudge. (yiiss!)
  • We will find out what happened to Hagrid's half brother Grawp. He will be a bit more controllable in book 6.
  • The Dursleys are in the next book, but Harry's stay with them will be the shortest yet. In book 5 he stayed for 4 weeks, so we know his stay will be less than 4 weeks.
  • Cho Chang will not be a romantic interest of Harry in Book 6, however there will be a "little romance" for Harry says JK. (draco! haha!)
  • In books 6 and 7 we will find out exactly why JK killed off Sirius.
  • Harry becomes even more powerful in book 6.
  • In books 6 and 7 we will find out why Dumbledore trusts Snape. (because he's married to me, and i'm a good good bwitch, that's why! *rofl*)
  • We will find out what happened to Wormtail AKA Peter Pettigrew
  • More about the animosity between Snape and Sirius will be revealed in the last 2 books.
  • JK has said that giving away the form of Snape's boggart and patronus says too much. We'll definitely find out what Snape's worst fear is, and it'll be important.
  • Hermione and Draco will NOT end up together in book 6 or 7. (oooh....)
  • We will find out what exactly Dudley saw when he looked at the dementors.
  • The reason Voldemort and Harry both didn't die when Voldemort tried to kill Harry, will be revealed.
  • We will see more of Draco's mother, Narcissa Malfoy, now that Lucius is busy. (well, well, well... my HP alterego's evil twin!)
  • We'll learn more about Harry's scar in the last 2 books.
  • Moaning Myrtle will make an appearance again, as will Tonks.
  • More about Voldemort's birth will be revealed, thus helping us understand why he is so evil. (interesting!)
  • Muggles begin to notice "more and more odd" occurrences in book 6, says JK.
  • The wizarding world is really at war in the sixth book.
  • Harry will tell his dearest friends about the prophesy after it sinks in to him.
  • We will learn more about Harry's relatives, including his grandparents (though JK says they aren't really important to the story)
  • We will find out what happened to Sirius's motorbike.
  • It's very important in the plot that Harry has his mother's eyes, and that her wand was very good for charms.
  • The choice between what's right and what's easy will be a pillar of the plot in Harry's last 2 years at Hogwarts.
  • Harry's parents' profession will be a big part of the plot.
  • Something HUGE will be revealed about Lily Potter. (!!!!)

i was first acquainted with this song when i watched "in good company" (starring dennis quaid, topher grace, and my newest fave actress scarlett johansson.), in the 'seduction' scene. the music was playing softly, and i was straining to hear... it felt so good to the ears. it has a bossa nova beat, and at the credits did i catch that it's besame mundo by diana krall. (it was originally composed in spanish by consuelo velasquez.)

right now, i am downloading it... i might put a jukebox here for you to listen! i swear i'm falling for this.. it's awesome. :)

    a scarlett rose

    scarlett & bill

like i told you in the taggie, i gutted myself to watch Lost in Translation on HBO last tuesday. it was a pretty nice film, were it not for the distractions (chatting with my aunt). the scene i especially like was the karaoke part, and the last scene (where bob had to leave) was touching. one beautiful discovery while watching the film was scarlett johansson. she's very lovely, i like her hair, and she's amazing to watch. she's like a girl-woman, innocent but with some fire under. i wouldn't be surprised if she'll be a big star (well, she already is) in the coming years.

    guess who?

    guess who?

    the mysterious king

i watched "kingdom of heaven" last sunday, and since after watching i have been boggled with "who is behind the mask of the mysterious king of jerusalem?" wonder no further! i read an article on box-office grosses just this friday with the picture of this king, and it captions that king baldwin IV was actually played by edward norton! oh! i didn't notice it on the credits (was he there?), and thought it was just an extra lad they got. the part where sibylla said to the king on his deathbed, "you were a beautiful boy" was recurrent in my mind, and now i see. edward's quite good-looking anyway, don't you think?

    Y 9:08 AM
    fascination with the 'dark' side

    palpatine & anakin

to begin with, i am NOT a "star wars" fan, i have never followed the whole "jedi vs. sith" thing even though i have seen all of the past SW movies (i don't recall anything though). i even think that this whole franchise is a piece of turd... i'm not into sequels, much less prequels, and george lucas should stop daydreaming of "a galaxy far, far away" just to make more money.

but one thing that connects me to the forthcoming SW 3: Revenge of the Sith movie, is my very weird fascination with fictional villains. why do i always have this empathy for 'poor misguided souls' that turn into evil? to round off my favorite villains, there's lex luthor from "smallville" (he's bald and charming), the green goblin from "spider-man 1", severus snape (well he's not exactly a villain, just villefied as a bad person), lucius malfoy, and tom riddle/lord voldemort in "harry potter". i know i'm not the only one, but what's strange in these is i don't sympathize the hero, i side with them! do i have a sidetracked mind or what? now it's chancellor palpatine and anakin skywalker! i think in the past two prequels my sole favorite character was palpatine for reasons unknown, maybe because i'm a sucker for politics during the time, he's old and wise and whatever. it stuck. anakin was simply eye candy, that's all. little did i know that in this (hopefully) last installment of the star wars saga that it's the palpatine guy (judging from the trailer) who leads anakin to become the wheezy darth vader! (i'm wondering, is c.p. the one with the freaky makeup wearing a hood?) *gasp* my goodness! do i have "villainy" intuition? maybe the police should use me as a radar for sniffing out the bad guys!

on the other end, one movie i'm looking forward to is the tom cruise (shame on you for being with Ms. Smirky! = katie holmes) starrer The War of the Worlds. now, please don't tell me i'm in love with the aliens!

    extremely dull makeover

i woke up around 9:00 this morning, lain around for a while, took a very damp shower, had my breakfast (which consisted of ONLY milk). then i had a very naggy thought of fixing up my room. MY ROOM???

well, i *hate* my room. it smells a bit old and shoe-y, and through the years it has accumulated junk (of the humongous kind) and dirt. the only "living space" will be my bed. i don't really spend time in my room save for snoozing, and so like cheese i let it become rotten and moldy. we don't have a maid for the past 3 years already, and i admit i'm quite a huge SLACKER in organizing things.

and so, at around 11am, i turned into "housekeep mode" and with my Weapons of Mass Dissemination (a broom, a dustpan, a big plastic bag and a wet rag) i labored around my little yellow room (which has spawned cobwebs on the ceiling). for entertainment, i turned my component on and finally heard alternative music again (since i don't listen to much radio the past few months). i took the bedsheets out for cleaning and wiped the edges of my bed. i took my used clothes out in a bin.

and here comes the big time-consuming part: clearing out the junk. it occupies almost half of my room! they're mostly 1) things my mom doesn't like to throw out (have not been used for years, and some are broken!), 2) my old books (i guess from grade 1 to high school fourth year!) in three kinds of boxes, 3) my old toys and knickknacks (for heaven's sake!), 4) around 2 dozen pairs of shoes (mom's and mine) all around stacked in boxes or bare, 5) 2 broken appliances, 6) lots of school paperwork i haven't had the heart to dispose, 7) old clothes (7 years' worth of em) and 8) dirt. if it were my decision, i'll throw the stuff out (with a garbage truck or something) and donate the books and clothes, but i bet it'll cause a ruckus with mommy dearest ("that's our investment, dammit!"). i have nothing better to do than to box them up. great thing we had around 5 empty boxes, so i went on to box up the shoes (the biggest space-consumer). it had the biggest box too. then the old things, and the old toys.

i moved my bed to a new direction, facing the sunlight. i stacked the boxes on top of each other, put some things back in its proper place, so the room won't be so clutter-y. i dusted the place afterwards. all in all, today's "extremely dull makeover" took around 5 hours to accomplish. good effects? at least 1) the junk-clutter level is now lowered to 1/3!, 2) the place is now much more suitable for living (and bumming around), and 3) my stress over the room upkeep has lessened. a college girl has to be tidy!

the blinds may still be dusty (i didn't know how to clean it), but i feel absolutely satisfied with what i've done. i'll ask my dad if we can have a paint job soon, and fix a part of the ceiling (ugh! the rainy season!). for now, my back feels tired and i'm very sleepy.

    yeah baby yeah!

i was quite giddy to watch the via satellite telecast of "the amazing race 7" season finale... and boy, it was such a delight! i was gunning in for the other 2 teams to win the 1 MILLION BUCKAROOS... and please, not the "shamelessly lucky" team! rob and amber are just too cunning and it's so weird that luck was on their side throughout this race... many times an 'unknown' force just seems to carry them up to the lead! but anyways, now it's been r&a, uchenna & joyce, and ron & kelly... i preferably was into uchenna & joyce to win the competition because they have the guts & determination... they're the nicest from the three. ron & kelly can be strong too, but they falter behind because kelly's emotional (in the worst of times) and ron can be really a redneck, so they get the wrong signals and commit a lot of fallback.

i love watching finales... the last i've seen (amazing race 5) was pretty okay, save for the winning team that is colin & christie. (my fave ar5 team, brandon & nicole, finished third.) i was hoping that in this season some deserving team wins.

london -- jamaica -- puerto rico -- miami
the 11th leg was just a warm-up to the really exciting 12th pitstop! although uchenna & joyce had their money taken away (finishing last in the last episode) and had to beg (which took a long time), they were able to catch up with the other 2 teams at the "muelle de azucar"... and finish it exactly like a rce! now you don't know who's in the lead... one second u&j's first, then r&k, then r&a! *arrgh* the best thing was the crossover from puerto rico to miami (the final destination!) it was a disadvantage to ron & kelly as they turned the wrong way to the airport, a very costly mistake... and so it boils down to the 2 neck-and-neck teams... on the airport, rob & amber got first on the scene and asked for the earliest flight to miami, with uchenna & joyce tailing a step behind. rob and amber bought tickets from the first airline (departing some 2 hours later?), but they went on and looked for another airline heading for miami, which was already boarding and they luckily (not again!) found their way in. oh no!!! i thought the worst was about to happen, but uchenna & joyce thought of their other options too and rush to the second airline (where r&a was in) to plead for seats. at the time, the thingy connecting the airplane to the terminal was already disintegrating, but thank heavens the pilot said they can still get in! the look on rob's face was priceless -- the "oh my gawd, me millions aren't safe now!" look -- as the couple passed them in the plane. then of the road to miami, they had to find "the king of the havanas" on calle ocho... it was a grrreat thing that uchenna & joyce had asked someone who knew spanish to translate the cigars shop to "el rey de los havanas", found the place easilty, and so they're taking the lead, leaving rob & amber aimlessly circling around in little havana. the climax part of the whole final leg was the very final part of the leg itself... as uchenna & joyce was short on taxi fare ($45), they were just feet away outside the pitstop (with phil & the other 9 past team-ups) on this place (can't remember). they had to beg yet again from people to contribute... believe me, it's the worst worst obstacle for the million $$$... it was so tension-filled, asking money took a long time and guts, and with the time ticking away came the worry rob & amber will be inching their way soon and will be there any minute...

and so, who ARE the ULTIMATE VICTORS???

....UCHENNA AND JOYCE!!! patrick (a former contestant.. cutie!) was muttering u&j, and that was my wish too, and the couple dashed in, with all the people cheering and clapping... it was so joyful! phil (who looked ABSOLUTELY HANDSOME in black, and that funky necklace he's wearing) broke into a wide grin and said, "5 continents, 26 (?) nations, 12 pitstops in this race around the world... uchenna & joyce, you are the winners of the amazing race." (something like that. i was too mesmerized to listen well!) i'm so happy for them, after everything they've gone through... i was cheery and teary when the couple was sharing their thoughts, that their partnership was made strong by this contest... they're planning to adopt soon... everyone was rejoicing with the fact someone who deserved this million bucks won, and when rob & amber came in, they were still clapping and stuff (maybe it's the "yes, they lost! hahaha!" cheer)... i'm pretty sure phil also didn't like rob & amber to win... heehee... but *hmmph* i still had to give the 'survivor' couple props for being a dang team to reckon. ron & kelly arrived some hours later, obviously tired and worn-out, but at least they made it to the pitstop with a grand reunion... i wish their relationship well.

overall, it's been a great season! congrats to uchenna & joyce... their begging went a long way! (i mean, if rob was in their case, he would've probably dived to the pitstop without paying the driver... i can be this evil!) ... now i've lost another show to watch with its closing... the next amazing race will probably be by the end of next month... but anyways, i will find pics of the show and post it here (finding phil!) *zip*

    WELCOME TO THE WEEKEND READ-A-THON!

to have a quick check on recent blog memory, i wrote in 2 days ago (thursday) that i am preparing my essay. but the jackpot is, i wrote not only one, but two! incredible. *yawn*

my two recent labours (oops, too much tony blair coverage!) of love are:
  • Gasoline Rainbows, written on thursday
  • Great Expectations, written today

it was a pleasure digging my head for words... it's been a long time (2 months) since my The Judenites school paper days (wherein my last article was of too much goodbyes!)... i am thinking of more 'projects' to oversee.

i have placed the 2 on separate posts, so you can comment free of the other. (oh please do! i'm pretty "lonely" like akon... :p) happy reading, hope it'll be your saturday-sunday schizoesque fix. :D

**and if you're wondering where'd i get my post title, the "top of the pops" #1 song from tony christie got stuck on my head the whole day...

    Great Expectations

Reaching the age of eighteen technically gives the notion of breaking away from youth and commencing the phase of adulthood. For us youngsters, it can only mean one thing: freedom! We are gripped less tightly from our parents' clutches, making our own decisions and doing the things we want with no authority stopping us, since it's legal now. Access to the town's hippest nightspots, the right to party Oktoberfest-style, being an audience of mature cinema, thumbing your way to the ballot box, and whatnot -- ah, the perks of being a full-fledged member of the state! Smile to the heavens and think that you should've grown up sooner and just let childhood drift -- this IS the good life!

But like every double-barreled 'wonder' cure, you have to pay for the pleasure you've gained. Newton has proved himself well with his law of interaction -- you must decide and think as if your life depends it, as you have sole responsibility for the whole ordeal, whether it blooms or bombs.

And more than knowing right from wrong, here's the "modern world" expectations for people coming of age. Oh, it has never looked so bad:

  • When you're 18, you don't ask questions. You ought to have learned the 4 W's and 1 H's of everything by then.

  • You're supposed to have a say on current issues and be globally conscious. If not, you'll be dismissed as a "pa-bourgeois effect" with not a care in the world.

  • You should know how to drive, or at least know the jeepney/bus/FX routes of this very congested metropolis.

  • At 18 you should have accumulated a fair amount of wisdom to dispense sage advice to your younger peers. In the case disaster happens, don't worry about your neck -- in no time it WILL be broken.

  • Your mind should be a treasure trove of general information (chemical symbols, countries AND its capitals & currencies) -- just so that you're "game-show worthy".

  • Being "grown-up" means having a considerable skill on public relations (PR) to rival that of your local politico's -- it will be your main thrust at work, at relationships, at life.

  • In the romance department, your present flame should be "the world's most eligible bachelor" or "the girl next door". For all we know, that's a dime in twelve dozen. And...

  • You know where you're at, and you know where it's going to take you.

Some (or all) of the expectations mentioned may be quite outrageous, as if turning eighteen means never getting caught playing Barbie or Lego ever again. Live and laugh with the post-menor de edad thrills, though consider the "dark truths" above as your survival manual for the future. Kids are growing up faster and more cunning than they used to be.

Many of my friends, myself included, are hitting the big 1-8 this year with the stark actualization that "we're getting older". Well, enjoy and make the most of our still very young lives actually, because no reality show is better than the one we're starring at.

    Gasoline Rainbows

Back in my early years, while waiting for the school bus to arrive, I sometimes chance upon gasoline rainbows on the side of pavement. These were the remnants of a leaky car tank a night ago, a waste that became an object of fascination to me, a puddle of black muck that when reflected by the rays of the sun, becomes a liquid prism. A simple joy it was, I started at the gasoline rainbow lingeringly, following the swirl of the colors until a bus honk drove me back to reality and to more complicated affairs.

Lately I have not seen these little vibrancies (or maybe I have not noticed), but I remembered my precocious experiences, recognizing the term from a novel I've just read. The happiness I felt that time must have been the same as those of the caveman's, who watched the sky change from the morning sun to a star-studded twilight. It was an innocent, sweet reminiscence.

Right now, a gasoline rainbow would have been a source of agitation for the car owner, increasing his vexation with the continuous rising of oil prices. Looking at gasoline rainbows for a youth of the 21st century would be dismissed as an activity for folks 'who have nothing better to do', preferring to listen to his iPod's 20,000-plus MP3s, or texting at her MMS-capable, WAP-powered, Bluetooth-activated mobile phone (with built-in camera, of course). It's not a problem, but the current observation is this: we seem to worry about the swelling cost of basic necessities, but we don't seem to mind spending on things that give us relatively temporary enjoyment. And you react: Hey, nothing is free in this world!

It is the same notion that got me thinking, where have all the 'freebies' gone? About playing games in the park, or giving joy and assistance -- be it to a loved one or a stranger, or communicating with a friend not just in real time, but in the flesh? What has become of 'life's gasoline rainbows'? They have been replaced instead by big companies offering you their products and services, subliminally telling you to blindly advocate them, while in fact it just benefits the provider and not the other way around. All you get is some body impairments (e.g. damaged ears, sore thumbs), the hole in the pocket as merely an afterthought. Nothing beats the satisfaction you get anyway.

Well, beat this. While you sit comfortably and have the fun and time of your life, have you thought of the next person? There is someone in the world that needs your help, your advice, your funny anecdote, your smile. Think of the underprivileged yet equally promising man (had he given the chance), while you spend your dough like there's no tomorrow... you might just end up like him down there in the streets. This is what's wrong with the present situation: we turn the other cheek to things that really matter, rather focusing on mundane gratification.

Take a breather. Have you been someone's 'gasoline rainbow' today? For I bet that the reward you'll attain is worth more than a pot of gold.

    still breathing, yeah

yet another pic-less post... i intended to put screencaps of what i watched yesterday on HBO, "The Matrix Revolutions"... i took the scene of Neo's conversation with The Architect (bleeehh!) which i was dreamily captioning, "BO--ergo--RING!!!"... but my shot was a little off-handled, so Neo didn't get into the pic and the white-haired sage-y Architect instead got the better of the pixels. i also wanted to level the "apropos" ennui of TMR by taking pictures of the mtv "Lady Marmalade" but mya, christina, pink and lil' kim got blurred and so, my photographer semi-ambitions are flung out of the window.

i've been taking my digitized camera in and out of the house to jl to just capture any particular moment of "max the telemachus", but for the past two days i haven't seen a shadow of him. where is he??? for kicks, i just took pictures of richard quest for consolation... =p

cnn has been talking about the UK General Elections... i believe the voting has started, and as reported they'll be covering the exit polls at friday morning (manille time). i'm not very interested in this, but i am hoping though that i will see max foster somewhere out there in the london bureau.

if i were to choose who's going to be the next uk pm, i'd rather choose hugh grant because i love his dancing... kidding! but really, grant (the yum prime minister of "love actually") was voted as "People's President" (or something like that) on a survey that asks people what actor who played fictional heads of state would they like to see as the REAL thing... based on the rankings: 1) Hugh Grant (from "Love Actually"), 2) Harrison Ford (from "Air Force One"), 3) Martin Sheen (from tv's "The West Wing"), 4) Bill Pullman (from "Independence Day), and 5) Kevin Kline (from "Dave")...

for now, i'm trying to work on an essay, "gasoline rainbows". i plan to finish it by tomorrow, and hope to post it by saturday. :)

    anchor-watching in mundanity

it's a beautiful (but HOT) month of may! i, for one, am particularly excited with the progress of the days... my dad said i'm wasting away my life in this long break, so i want to break out of this mundane existence and commingle with several other homo sapiens who are also designated to the same predicament (how "trying hard" to be politically correct.)

however "rockish" (literally!) my vacation seems to be, i admit there are also good things I'm thankful for:
    1) no back-braking, brain-splitting, teeth-gnashing schoolwork. though i awfully want to experience these syndromes by now, at least i needn't be worrying about making the grade. these 'cravings' always happen in the wrong time anyway. i better wish i hadn't wished it.

    2) loads of free time. eating any possible snack at any possible time, waking up in the weekends late, be a couch potato for all you care, surfing the net WITH a reason, doing something you hadn't had the time to when you were hectic, daydreaming 24/7. who wouldn't like that? (AND if you don't, give me 50 REASONS why!)

    3) cable tv!!! many times i don't see the 'heaven' of cable... unless you are in the RIGHT SHOW at the RIGHT CHANNEL at the RIGHT TIME. i'm not saying this because i don't have a TV Guide, i'm just not the type of person who loves anything dished out to her. like in the case of vegetables, i'm "picky". whenever i hate the LOOKS of the scene (if the actors look bad, if the comedy / love scene / horror / drama looks horrible, the script looks sucky, any thing that makes me abhor the show), i scram within five minutes. i'm not into sitcoms. i'm not into reality dating shows. i'm not into teen dramas. i'm not into old movies (80's to early 90's) that HBO regularly shows at my time of day. (ENTER the REAL part of my post :p)

i'm not into news as i used to be (like 5 years ago, i religiously watch 'em), and so when i'm not interested in what they report (usually, because of the timezones, the news i get is always 'recycled'... they report almost the same things every hour), i channel-surf. however, one gorgeous thing that made me glued to the cnn screen again is... (ta-dah! *drumroll*) Max Foster! (*ahem* it's not the biggest reason why i watch cnn, ok? i DO follow the news!) i recently discovered the anchor (the latest in my never-ending saga of anchor-watching since 2000) last month (something like the 2nd week of april), while reading "The Catcher in the Rye". he's cute, my first thought came. then back to reading. didn't see max until a few days later. then in the middle of really excruciating boredom (i was not doing anything that time) did it strike me: he's definitely cute! for some time before, i was searching for my favorite cute anchor tony campion, but Vic from PEx told me that tony left since december 23. (where did he go?) awww.. no wonder. i haven't watched cable until last month. and so, another dreamboat arrived and replaced my darling physicist (ha! tony holds a doctorate in particle physics!)... and a handsome one! i'm pretty much relieved. i like max because he's boyish (like tony) and he's got a sense of humor. he swivels his chair (i have seen that thrice) like a precocious kid, and unleashes a grin (sometimes) before every break and before he says goodbye. and this, i have learned semi-monitoring him for around three days. and i LOVE it!

my latest net wonder is joining the CNN Fan Forum. it's great to post my marvels of cable news there... g'day! :)
